For the latest on poetic events happening in Centeral Massachusetts and beyond visit poetsasylum.org. ------------------------------ 24 hour Poetry Feature [image: Bill MacMillan] *Bill MacMillan* will undertake a 24-hour poetry feature starting Saturday, April 5th at 8:00 p.m. Bill will read poetry, his own work and covers, over the following 24 hours, wrapping up as the weekly Asylum open reading gets underway. The Q Cafe has generously agreed to stay open all night long so that Bill may undertake this endeavor. Bill is taking part in a coordinated national movementto have 24-hour readings across the country happening at the same time. The Poets' Asylum will be using this as a fundraising opportunity. Visit our Fundraising page to make a donation. This week *Michael Fisher* will facilitate a workshop titled *The Poem Can't Say a Thing If It doesn't Sing: A discussion of Prosody and Tone in Poetry. *In this workshop we will discuss the effect of prosody on a poems meaning and tone. We will be looking at examples from Paul Celen, Anne Waldman and Charles Bukowski. By exploring these examples, it is my hope that we can grow as poets and expand are "poet toolbox." Newcomers Sophia Holtz, Charley Pope and Andy Locke were joined by seasoned slammers Sean Conlon and Esme Vanndrager for a high energy set. Their well practiced set included stories of growth, growing up, missing gloves, marketing rants and the addiction of poetry. They head off to Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday to compete at the National College Poetry Slam. Thanks for sharing your talent folks. Run by Bobby Gibbs, the reading is held in the Kelly Square Yacht Club and starts at 7:30 p.m. An open mic follows the feature. No cover but bring money to buy a beverage and to support the feature. ------------------------------ Worcester Storytellers this Friday Night *Worcester Storytellers* meets on the second Friday of each month at the Village Arts Gallery (1 Ekman Street, Worcester). The reading starts at 8:00 p.m. There will be an open mic followed *Paul Gagnon* will be the feature. Worcester Storytellers never charges a cover. The Boston Phoenix has named him "Best Standup Poet," the Boston Poetry Awards "Best Love Poet," and the Cambridge Poetry Awards "Best Spoken Word" and "Best Humorous Poet". First off *Bill MacMillan* completed the 24 Hour Poetry Readinghe started Saturday night. Even after 100s of poems he had the energy to jump around the room talking about natural selection and dinosaur books. And if the feat of reading poetry for 24 hours straight isn't enough Bill's efforts also netted the Poets' Asylum over $700 toward the expenses of the 2008 Worcester Slam Team. Thanks Bill. After Bill completed his mission the regular Sunday night reading was held. Following the open mic we held the final *Open Qualifying Slam* for the 2008 Worcester Slam Season. Six brave souls took to the stage - a around of applause for Kate, Cassandra, Cyndi, Gary, Sam and Dave K. At the end of two rounds the winners were *Sam* and *Gary*. They move on to the Spring semi-finals on May 4th. Thanks to everyone who popped in during the day, came to the open mic or competed in the slam. Here's some of what is happening this weekend. ------------------------------ WCPA College Poetry Finals Come out for the first annual Worcester County Poetry Association *College Poetry Competition Finalists' Reading*. The finalists reading will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Saxe Room at the Worcester Public Library (1 Salem Square, Worcester). The winners will be announced at a reception immediately following the reading. Please come out and support the youth slammers! ------------------------------ Worcester Youth Slam Saturday Night Join the Worcester Youth Slam for a special *Open Invitational Tryout* for the 2008 Worcester Youth Slam Team on Saturday, April 26th. This special event will be held at The Q Cafe (362 Chandler Street, Worcester) and will start at 7:00 p.m. This is a ONE TIME ONLY EVENT - no feature or open mic. They are trying to put a team of 4-6 youth poets (age 13-19) together for a trip to the 11th Annual Brave New Voices National Youth Slam Festival (www.youthspeaks.org) to compete against 44 teams from around the country this July in Washington, DC. The youth slam is looking to hopefully re-establish a regular reading and slam series in September.
