She was a member of the 2002 Worcester Slam team and was voted Best Female poet at the 2006 Savannah Spoken Word Festival. She was recently elected to the board of the Worcester County Poetry Association. This July she will be one-third of the brick house that is the *Best Tour Ever Tour 2009* along with tour mates Matt Fox and Nick Davis. Come out for a night of great words at Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at * 6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature. ------------------------------ May 31st Revisited We love hearing new voices in the open mic and there were a couple this week. Please join us again, it was great to hear you read. After the open we held the *One Minute Slam*. Heather, Dave K, Meagan, Bill and Gary each took part in the 3 round just-for-fun slam. The longest poem clocked in just over the grace period at 1 minute 10.1 seconds. The shortest poem was a whole 15.9 seconds (and it wasn't a hiaku). At the end of the slam *Bill* beat out Meagan by 2/10ths of a point to win the slam. Thanks to all who took part. ------------------------------ Fundraising Update [image: Fundraising Thermometer] This week another $106 was raised toward the expenses of sending a team to the 2009 National Poetry Slam. We've raised a total of $1493 so far. Thanks to all those who have given money in support of the team. We still need to raise a minimum of another $1007 to cover our expenses. To date the Poets' Asylum has spent $2438.50 on NPS registration, hotel rooms & airfare to West Palm Beach. We have at least another couple hundred in necessary expenses before August. We can't do this without you and we thank you for your generosity. We are looking toward our always supportive community for their assistance in raising that money. Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, Melinda began experimenting with words at 14. At 15, she co-organized a spontaneous outdoor open mic held in Amherst. Since her move to Worcester, MA in early 2007, development in the arts has been a rudimentary focus of hers. Circa February 2009, Melinda self-published a zine titled *Dert: A Manifesto of Art & Poetry*. Melinda is one of the bright new voices heard in Worcester. We hope you'll join us to hear what she has to share. Come out for a night of great words at Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature. ------------------------------ June 14th Revisited Thanks to the eager supporters of slam who joined the *Team Feature* this week. Dani, Dave, Trevor & McKendy offered three poems each in themed rounds. Round one was about fire, round two family and the final round was reserved for intimate relations, or boinking as slammaster Bill MacMillan phrased it. The team also released a chapbook of their work. Suggested donation for the chapbook is $5 though more is gratefully accepted. See our fundraising goddess Cyndi Keeley to pick up your copy. ------------------------------ Slam Circus - The Big Show The 2009 Worcester Slam Team take the show on the road in a *Slam Circus*on Friday, July 17th at PACE - the Pioneer Art Center of Easthampton . We had a full house for Father's Day, a packed open with 6 new readers and a fantastic feature by *Melinda Lee*. Melinda gave us a well paced set with heavy & deep pieces mixed together with some humorous work. Bill MacMillan joined her at the mic for a dual voice version of "Frequently Asked Questions" which generated much audience laughter. Her pieces on the holocaust and the struggle of a relationship drew appreciative silence followed by enthusiatic applause. Thank you for sharing your work with us Melinda. ------------------------------ Fundraising Update [image: Fundraising Thermometer] So far this year we have raised $1569 toward the expenses of sending a team to the 2009 National Poetry Slam. Thanks to all those who have given money in support of the team. The team has produced a chapbook to help raise money for their trip to Florida in August. You can pick up a copy from Cyndi Keeley at the reading. We are asking for a minimum donation of $5 for the book; you can always give more if the spirit moves you. We also have a t-shirt design in the works. You can reserve a shirt in your size by e-mailing webmaster @ poetsasylum.org with your shirt size. We expect shirts to sell for $15 each. We still need to raise a minimum of another $931 to cover our expenses. To date the Poets' Asylum has spent $2438.50 on NPS registration, hotel rooms & airfare to West Palm Beach. We have at least another couple hundred in necessary expenses before August. We can't do this without you and we thank you for your generosity. ------------------------------ Ballard Street Poetry Journal Workshop [image: BSPJ image] The next Ballard Street Poetry Journal *Writing Workshop* starts up on July 5th. The worshop is titled *Looking to Mythology and Legend* and will be led by 2009 Worcester Slam Team member Dave Keali'i. The goal of this workshop is to utilize the rich tradition of world mythology and legend in poetry. While Greek and Roman mythology is a vast mine, there is a whole world out there that can be explored. Participants are encouraged to keep an open mind and consider what other pantheons, archetypes and legend may be discovered. The workshops will run on July 5th, 19th and 26th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Registration for the workshop series is required. To register, or learn more about the workshop, visit ballardstreetpoetryjournal.com . ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond.
