Hardy poets gathered at Jumpin' Juice & Java Sunday night despite the pending winter storm for a bit of word play. The challenge was to craft two poems using 100 words. 8 poets rose to the task, though one had to drop out because he didn't realize he needed two pieces. Still there was some interesting work, a couple of real gems and a lot of new writing going one. At the end of the night *Melinda* took first place and the $50 prize that went with it. Thanks to everyone who competed and came out for the fun. ------------------------------ WCPA Poetry Contest 2009 Prizes: $100 - 1st place, $50 - 2nd place, $25 - 3rd place plus Honorable Mentions, as merited. Winning poems published in a future issue of The Worcester Review . To be judged by James Haug. Submission deadline is Wednesday, April 1, 2009. Mason has been actively promoting poetry and folk music in greater Boston since the mid 1980's. A member of the first National Poetry Slam Team from Boston in 1991 and the first Worcester Team in 1993, he honed his performance style around the campfires of the fabled Kerrville Folk Festival giving the songwriters a run for their money. Currently he resides in Fort Point, South Boston. 2003 saw the release of *Bones and Breath*, a compelling collaboration of poetry and song produced by Frank Coakley that fully merges the arts of songwriting and poetry. The reading starts at 8:00 p.m. with a brief open mic. 21+ and proper id is required. ------------------------------ Coming up on Sunday, March 29th [image: Poetic Boxing] This week the *Poets' Asylum* will hold the next *open qualifying slam* for the 2009 Worcester Slam team. Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words. The top finisher tonight moves on to the Team Finals in May. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the reading. ------------------------------ WCPA Poetry Contest 2009 Prizes: $100 - 1st place, $50 - 2nd place, $25 - 3rd place plus Honorable Mentions, as merited. Submission guidelines and additional information available at wcpa.homestead.com . ------------------------------ March 22nd Revisited We had a quietish sort of night at the Poets' Asylum this past Sunday. Not sure where everyone went; we had a fine time with our feature *Tim Mason*. Tim kicked off his set with a tight piece about the wonder of chocolate. He gave us a view of Texas drivers and the change in attitudes toward baseball cards. He covered the venerable Jacob Knight & Coy Cain and closed out the night with a powerful piece about having the right role model. An excellent feature from a talented author. Thanks for the words Tim. ------------------------------ Slam Stuff Congratulations to *Dave Keali'i* on his first place win at the March 19th open slam at The Spot. He moves on to the Team Finals on May 24th. The next qualifying slams will be March 29th @ the Poets' Asylum. Also congratulations to Rachel McKibbens on winning to the 2009 Women of the World Poetry Slam this past weekend in Detroit, MI. ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond.
