The reading starts at 8:00 p.m. There will be an open mic followed by a feature from *Ted Blackler*. Blackler has promised an eclectic and occasionally silly mix of short writings, including anecdotes from the scientific community, "minutes" from "off-site strategy meetings", snippets from his work-in-progress fantasy novel and an invocation of spring. Worcester Storytellers never charges a cover. They ask you throw some money into the basket to support the artists who feature. For more info please contact dave... @aol.com. ------------------------------ Coming up on Sunday, May 10th [image: Gary Hoare] Join the Poets' Asylum on Sunday, May 10th for our regular poetry open mic and a feature by *Gary Hoare*. Hoare is an artist and writer living in Worcester. He is a veteran of several Worcester and Providence poetry slam teams, most recently the 2007 Worcester Poetry Slam Team that competed in Austin, TX. Best known for his humorous work he also crafts startlingly honest pieces that frame the answers to questions unspoken. If the last time you heard from him was back on a slam team you should come hear him now. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature. ------------------------------ May 3rd Revisited Thanks to the folks to who joined us this week for the * Finish the Poem*slam. We had three slammers compete and 3 judges offer up scores. At the end of the two rounds *Dave Macpherson* won the slam and our admiration. For posterities sake here are the first / last lines for the two rounds. Round one: "Greetings from Worcester" / "Wish you were here." Round two: "The moon" / "sleep" ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond. Woods has published work in a variety of publications and has been featured multiple times in national press, including multiple appearances on National Public Radio. He MCs the Writers' Block Poetry Night, an open mic series in Columbus , Ohio . In 2006 he became the first poet to ever complete a 24-hour solo poetry reading, a feat he bested every year since by performing for 24 hours each time, but without repeating a single poem. You can check out his work at www.blackair.org. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the feature. ------------------------------ May 10th Revisited Thanks to all who came out for the Mother's Day edition of the Poets' Asylum. We had our first full open in a couple of months, it was good to hear a wide variety of work. Welcome to first time reader Peter, do come again. Asylum regular *Gary Hoare* was our feature this week. Gary moved from off the cuff readings to reading from the printed page to reading off his iPod Touch. He covered a They Might Be Giants song and read an excerpt from Life, the Universe and Everything by Douglas Adams. While he shared a couple of his slam poems he mostly stuck with quieter, introspective pieces. His work found inspiration in diverse sources, from the History Channel to the grocery store to recycling. It was a well formed set. Thanks for the words Gary. ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond. This is unfortunate and we are all rather bummed that he won't be able to wow us with his words. We'll work with Scott to reschedule him for later in the year. To fill the void we'll be holding a *Cover Slam* this Sunday following the poetry open mic. This will be a just-for-fun slam with two rounds (3 minutes each). All the usual rules apply (time penalties, no props, etc.) with one change - you must use someone else's poetry for both rounds. The winner takes home a $10 prize and everyone else gets to hear some fantastic words. Please join us at Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). After the open they will host a feature by *Melinda Lee*. Melinda has made a splash around the area with her tug at the heart poetry and smooth delivery. The reading starts at 8:00 p.m. with a brief open mic. 21+ and proper id is required. ------------------------------ 2009 Worcester Slam Team Finals This Sunday, May 24th [image: A Microphone] For fans of slam poetry it all comes down to this. Sunday, May 24th, the Poets' Asylum will hold for the *2009 Worcester Slam Finals*. The top finishers from the eight qualifying slams will compete in four rounds of poetic melee to determine who will represent Worcester at the 2009 National Poetry Slam. Expected to complete are Liz Heath, Trevor Byrne-Smith, Cowboy Matt, Danny Balel, Dave Keali'i, Danielle Carriveau, Aslan King and McKendy Fils-Aime. This is bound to be a hot night with great poetry and top rate performances from everyone. You can join in the fun by coming down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the slam team. We hope to see you Sunday night! ------------------------------ May 17th Revisited Thanks to all those who came out this week for the *Cover Slam*, especially the enthusiastic table of mostly newcomers in the back of the room. The work of Leonard Cohen, Taylor Mali, Gary Hoare, Eric Darby, William S. Burroughs, Shannon Leigh, and Simone Beaubien filled the room via the vocal cords of Dave Mac, Cyndi Keeley, Bill MacMillan and Trevor Byrne-Smith. At the end of the night *Bill MacMillan* won the slam and the $10 prize. He generously donated the prize money back to the Asylum to help fund the slam team. ------------------------------ Fundraising Update As of May 17th we need to raise an additional $1313 to send the team to West Palm Beach (and back), cover the hotel room, pay for PSI memberships for the team members and maybe give the team a bit toward food. We will be polling the audience the next couple of weeks to find out what fundraising activities they find to most appealing. Please join the reading and be part of the decision making process. We are looking toward our always supportive community for their assistance in raising that money. If you have an idea for a fundraiser that you are willing to organize please drop an email to webmaster @ poetsasylum . org . ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond. The reading gathers starting at 8:00 p.m. but honestly things don't usually get started until 9ish. They hold an open mic followed by a feature and this week the feature will be *Dave Macpherson*. Macpherson is the host of the once a month Worcester Storytellers, a member of the WCPA board and a member of several Worcester Slam teams. He plans to have a new chapbook available. 21+ and proper id is required. ------------------------------ Coming up on Sunday, May 31st [image: A Stopwatch] Please join the *Poets' Asylum* on Sunday, May 31st for our regular poetry open mic and the *One Minute Slam*. This just-for-fun slam will consist of 3 1-minute rounds. You must use your own work and the other regular rules (no props, time penalties) are in effect. From haiku to short nuggets of poetic gold this should be a fast paced good time. We hope you'll join in the fun. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the bucket to support the reading and the 2009 Worcester Slam team. ------------------------------ Fundraising Update Thanks to all those who threw money into the bucket when it went around at the Team Finals on May 24th. We raised $200 that night. We can't do this without you! We still need to raise an additional $1113 to send the team to West Palm Beach (and bring them back), cover the hotel room, pay for PSI memberships for the team members and maybe give the team a bit toward food. ------------------------------ May 24th Revisited [image: 2009 Team] Congratulations to the 2009 Worcester Slam Team... Danielle Carriveau, Trevor Byrne-Smith, Dave Keali'i, Danny Balel and alternate McKendy Fils-Aime. They will represent Worcester at the 2009 National Poetry Slam in West Palm Beach, Florida. It was quite a night with a small open, a packed house and the four round *2009 Worcester Slam Team Finals*. All eight competitors brought their best work and there was nary a stumble along the way. We are grateful to Liz Heath, Trevor Byrne-Smith, Cowboy Matt, Danny Balel, Dave Keali'i, Danielle Carriveau, Aslan King and McKendy Fils-Aime for sharing their talent with us. There was a tie for first place but that's not important. With only four spots available on the team we found ourselves with a tie for fourth place at the end of the night. Danny & McKendy went head-to-head in a fifth round and Danny snagged the four slot on the team rooster. McKendy earned the alternate spot; we hope to raise enough money to send him to Nationals along with the team. The scores can be viewed on the Slam page . Our thanks to slammaster Bill MacMillan for running a great show, Cydni Keeley for collecting the scores and to the amazing supporters of slam poetry in Worcester who showed up in force, kept the energy high and cheered all the competitors. We couldn't do this without any of you. Heck, we wouldn't want to do this without all of you. ------------------------------ The Poets' Asylum is in its eighteenth year of bringing the best in Performance and Slam Poetry to Central Massachusetts and beyond.
