This will be a two round slam with all the usual rulesin play. There will be a small cash prize for the winner. Simply put, poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The sign-up list goes up around 6:00 p.m. with the reading starting closer to 6:30. No cover; please put some money in the bucket to support reading. ------------------------------ October 18th Revisited Thanks to all those who braved the lovely New England weather to join the Poets' Asylum this week. Those who were there heard several new voices and a feature by New Hampshire poets *Mark Palos* & *Ryan McLellan*. With a mix of slam throwdowns and page pieces Mark & Ryan offered their take on coffee, jazz, poems about poetry, values, Bob Dylan and two spins of Oz. It was a fun night with lots of interest after the feature. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/. He'd been averaging about a poem a year until 1992-93, when two things happened. First, his new wife, Carol, blackmailed him into attending a workshop with Galway Kinnell; then he brought his daughter Annie, for her birthday, to the open mike at the Cantab Lounge in Central Square, Cambridge, hoping she'd get excited about poetry. Jack was the one who got hooked. He doesn't think of himself as a "performance poet," but as a "standup poetry guy," a writer of poems that perform themselves. Please join us at Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The sign-up list goes out by 6:00 p.m. and the reading starts around 6:30 p.m. No cover; please put some money in the bucket to support the feature. ------------------------------ October 25th Revisited Thanks to those you came out this past Sunday for the regular poetry open mic and an *open slam*. Only three poets took part in the slam - Jackie, Danny and Anna. The judges were tough but fair and at the end of two rounds we had a winner... *Jackie*. She took home the $10 cash prize. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/.
