This was an amazing night of poetry before a packed house with many first timer visitors to the Poets' Asylum weekly reading. This was intended to be four round slam however at the end of round 4 we found three poets, Dani, Trevor and Gary, tied at 29.8. Slammaster Bill MacMillan gave the poets one minute to craft a haiku for a fifth round. Trevor scored a 26.2, Dani scored a 26.1 and, in the final poem of the night Gary Hoare snagged the win with a 26.9. Thanks go out to all the amazing poets who competed. That would be Danny Balel, Trevor Byrne-Smith, Dani Carriveau, Alex Charalambides, Nick Davis, McKendy Fils-Aime, Bobby Gibbs, Gary Hoare and Dave Keali'i. Mad props to Liz Heath and Bill MacMillan for running a great show, the judges for keeping the scores tight and to the audience for keeping the judges honest. We couldn't do it without any of you. A big shout out to the 30 or so new to Worcester folks who joined us. We hope you'll come back again. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/. Baz* and a *One Minute Slam*. J.W. Baz is a guy who never learned to shut up. Equal parts poignant and perverse, hilarious and heart-wrenching, his career as a writer-performer is defined by duality. His work has appeared on NPR, in the Chicago Tribune, and in hundreds of venues across the United States and Canada. The One Minute Slam will be a three (3) round slam and all the rounds will be one minute or less. Other than the time limit the usual rulesapply (original work, no props, penalty for going over time). Some amazing work was presented the last time we held a One Minute Slam - come check it out! Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts around 6:00 p.m. No cover; please put some money in the bucket to support the feature. Hope to see you there! ------------------------------ Worcester Poetry Collective As the hosts of the weekly Poets' Asylum reading like to say we are not alone in this poetry universe. In Worcester supports four weekly poetry readings, a monthly storytellers gathering, adult & youth slam teams and more. The performance poetry venues in Worcester have formed a collective to celebrate that diversity and help foster cooperation in spreading the word about words. This past weekend the Collective distributed 500 Spoken Word CDs at stART on the Street 2009 . The CD includes some of the best performance poetry to be found at the local poetry venues. We've also put together a website to collect basic info about the performance poetry venues in Worcester. Think of it as a starting point to explore the wealth of words waiting to be heards. Please check it out at http://poetsasylum.org/collective. We hope to see you soon. ------------------------------ September 20th Revisited Another Sunday night, another great reading, another excellent feature. Following a packed open mic *Dave Macpherson* took to the mic for as our feature. His poetry moved from a schoolboy crush on the Wicked Witch of the West to a Kafkaesque muppet to Aquaman's day job with ease. It was a fun set with a lot of laughter and a raised eyebrow or two. Thanks for the words Dave. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/. This message was sent to you from the pa-info mailing list of the Poets' Asylum (poetsasylum.org).
